“A superpowered telescope,” Jasper Noonan announced. “So I could see all the way to Neptune!”

“My own karaoke machine!” Helen Zucker-man shouted.

“A roomful of art supplies,” Geetha Nair confessed.

I knew what I’d buy: a clue. The stolen necklace was still a mystery. Who took it? Why did they take it? And why did they want me to deliver the money?

I got my lucky break that very afternoon. I was in line for the bus. A few kids were jostling around, bumping and yapping. Bobby Solofsky was pushing, like always. I asked Mila, “How’d you get home yesterday anyway? Did your father give you a lift?”

“Actually, Kayla’s boyfriend stopped by right after you called,” Mila said. “He gave me a ride on his mountain bike.”

“Cool.”

“He talked nonstop,” Mila continued. “He said he took his bike everywhere—off trail or to school, it didn’t matter. He teased me for riding the Big Yellow Twinkie.”

I raised an eyebrow. “The Big Yellow … what?”
